I. High Machining Precision
For some small and medium-sized through holes, the cylindricity can reach within 0.001mm. For some parts with uneven wall thickness, such as connecting rods, the roundness can reach 0.002mm. For large holes, the roundness can also reach 0.005mm. If there are no annular grooves or radial holes, straightness within 0.01mm/1m is also possible. Honing has higher machining precision than grinding because during grinding, the bearing supporting the grinding wheel is located outside the honed hole, which will cause deviation. Grinding has poor precision for small holes. Honing generally only improves the shape accuracy of the machined part. To improve the positional accuracy of the part, some necessary measures need to be taken, such as using a faceplate to improve the perpendicularity of the end face of the part to the axis.
II. Good Surface Quality
The surface has a cross-textured pattern, which is beneficial for the storage of lubricating oil and the maintenance of the oil film. It has a high surface support ratio (the ratio of the actual contact area between the hole and the shaft to the mating area between them), thus it can withstand larger loads, is wear-resistant, and thereby improves the service life of the product. Honing speed is low (a fraction of the grinding speed), and the honing stone makes surface contact with the hole, resulting in low average grinding pressure per abrasive grain. This minimizes heat generation on the workpiece during honing, leaving almost no thermal damage or altered layer on the workpiece surface, and minimizing deformation. The honed surface is virtually free of embedded sand and extruded hard layers.
III. Wide Machining Range
It mainly processes various cylindrical holes: through holes, holes with axial and radial discontinuities, such as holes with radial holes or grooves, keyway holes, spline holes, blind holes, multi-step holes, etc. Additionally, with a dedicated honing head, it can also process conical holes and elliptical holes, but this is generally not used due to the complex structure of the honing head. External honing tools can be used to hone cylinders, but the amount of material removed is much smaller than that removed by internal honing. Honing can process any material. The application of diamond and cubic boron nitride abrasives further expands the application range of honing and greatly improves the efficiency of honing.
IV. Low Removal Allowance
To achieve the accuracy required by the drawing, honing is the machining method that removes the least amount of material. In honing, the honing tool uses the workpiece as a guide to remove excess material and achieve the required accuracy. During honing, the honing tool first hones the areas with the largest removal allowance, and then gradually hones to the areas with the smallest removal allowance.
V. Strong Hole Correction Ability
Due to the shortcomings of other machining processes, some machining defects may occur during the process. These include: out-of-roundness, flared holes, corrugated holes, small dimensions, drum-shaped holes, taper, boring tool marks, reamer marks, rainbow-like patterns, hole deviation, and surface roughness.
